Visiosonics – Digital Art Practice – (book-in-progress - working title)
This writing explores the practical, theoretical and conceptual aspects that have informed, influenced and supported the evolution of the term ‘music’ through its digital transformation to ‘sonic art’ or ‘audio art’. This shifting perception can be observed in audio-visual, abstracted, conceptual and / or site-specific contemporary art practice. The narrative traces the effect and impact of the transition from analogue to digital and the ways in which developments in media technologies have accompanied changes in social, cultural, political and philosophical thinking about art.

BoldAs – A series of works for brass trio (Tuba, Trombone, Saxophone/s) and electronics. Each player is prepared with on-body speaker dissemination systems to facilitate interactive electro-acoustic works in site-specific situations. Recorded materials are stored and played back using on-body mp3 players. This work received its world premier in Glasgow (2011) and continues to be developed and exhibited to a number of European festivals in 2012. The focus of this work is extended brass instrumental technique – particularly involving tuba and trombone ‘beat-boxing’ techniques in conjunction with electro-acoustic sound designs. Video On Vimeo

The Visual Voice project - in collaboration with ENT consultant Mr John Rubin and team - I continue to investigate the working possibilities of the MAX/MSP Jitter interface applications for presenting works that explore ideas about affect utterance, the voice and live interactive abstract audio-visual representation in performance. Works produced include - From Anger To Sadness #1, #2, #3, #4.

Current Project

The Visual Voice - A collaborative research project involving Dr Frank Millward & Dr John Rubin - The Visual Voice

The Visual Voice project explores the connections between scientific visualization processes, artistic visualization processes and their relationships to sound, knowing that each informs the other and that the blurred divide between technical and artistic is interdisciplinary territory where innovation and new knowledge is created.

This research produces interactive multimedia outcomes that appeal directly to the senses, beyond verbal language, it explores the dilemma between reality and representations of reality and promotes the idea that such work can facilitate knowledge exchange between creative compositional processes, emotional well being and other related issues.
